Socialcast CEO Timothy Young makes connections - San Francisco Gate

Posted:

Timothy Young's successful entrepreneurial career was built upon Legos.

In particular, the sets his father, an international salesman, brought back from Harrods in London when Young was about 3.

Despite warnings from relatives and friends that the pieces were too tiny for a tyke, his parents gave him the gift, and then sat back surprised when Young didn't immediately start playing with it.

As the story goes, Young said, "When I opened the actual toy, I didn't start messing with it; I sat there and went through the entire directions.

"If there's one word to categorize what has fascinated me throughout life, it's building. And that's where it started - looking at something as simple as a bunch of blocks and how you take all the individual blocks and create something greater than the sum of its parts."

The 29-year-old, who comes from a family of entrepreneurs, also has developed a knack for convincing people to pay for what he wants to build. Last year, he raised more than $10 million in venture funding for two startups: Socialcast, where he is CEO and which provides companies an online collaboration tool akin to Facebook, and personal profile site About.me, which he co-founded.

The latter quickly signed up 400,000 users and was publicly available just four days when it was snapped up by AOL in December. Per the terms of the sale, Young can't comment on the price, but TechCrunch (also owned by AOL) at the time guessed the amount to be "in the tens of millions of dollars."

Young has been so successful at garnering venture funds that his November post on TechCrunch, "365 days, $10 million, three rounds, two companies, all with five magic slides," (sfg.ly/epseks) has been shared by thousands of people.

But how did he go from real building blocks to virtual creations?

First, he credits his parents, who bought him his first computer - an Apple IIGS - when he was 5.

"That's when I really started getting interested in computers and being able to build things where you're unconstrained by the physical world," said Young, who grew up in Southern California with three younger siblings.

"I was really fortunate that my parents allowed me to spend a lot of time in front of screens and bought me computers."

He also spent several summers at Project Think, an enrichment program, before earning a computer science degree from UC Riverside. There, he met the woman he would marry, Carrie, who runs client services as one of Socialcast's 30 employees. The couple have a 7-month-old son, Grayson, and a 2-year-old French bulldog, Denali, who skitters across the hardwood floors of the company's new office in South Park.

"I don't know if we have a work/life balance," he said. "But we love what we do."

Young became interested in communication among employees and machines in high school and college, when he worked in the materials division of an irrigation company.

Shortly after graduation, he started a company called Event Robot, which provided social networking software around brands. The software powered the back end of musicians' websites - the Pussycat Dolls was their first group - and built virtual communities around such events as Ozfest.

About that time, sites like Facebook were cropping up, offering consumers the same kind of interconnectedness Event Robot was providing brands.

The company decided to become a product provider focused on connecting people within companies and changed its name to Socialcast.

Early attention came from venture capital firms in the Bay Area; Socialcast ended up being funded by True Ventures in San Francisco and received a later infusion by Menlo Ventures.

The company moved to South Park in mid-2009. A few months later, True Ventures agreed to back About.me.

In the fourth quarter of last year alone, Socialcast signed up seven of the Fortune 100 companies. Among its clients are Phillips, Nokia, General Motors, Humana and SAS.

"People spend an amazing amount of time just getting on the same page," Young said. "How can we speed up and do more with less? We don't think we can get rid of meetings necessarily, but we can cut down on a lot of the frivolous ones."

Basically, employees - many times scattered across the country or continents - narrate their work on Socialcast's activity feed, which keeps everyone updated in real time, regardless of time zone.

"It gives you peripheral vision," he said. "You can see what's going on around you without having to slow down or stop your work."

As for the Socialcast office, he said, "We have almost no meetings and almost no interruptions. We run our office very much like a library."

Enhancing that theme is a wall of books that greets visitors to the office. Young is a voracious reader - and he prefers the tactile experience of paper volumes. Last year, he read 146 titles, mostly nonfiction and history, which he likes to mine for ideas for the future.

"We've built the company to be a long-term growth company. We don't have any aspirations of doing anything else," he said. "We want to exit this next 10-year cycle being a big enterprise software company."
